What Makes Jasprit Bumrah So Special?

Jasprit Bumrah has it on the trot. In Antigua test earlier this year which was the first test of India’s tour of West Indies, Bumrah produced something out of this world.

Similar to Antigua, he was too good for the Caribbean batsmen. Poor Darren Bravo and John Campbell got out caught behind having not played wrong shots. It was just Bumrah’s excellence. After Bravo’s dismissal, West Indian batting lineup got crumbled. The thunderbolts to Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase got their pads plumb in front. Inclusive of Bumrah, most thought the hat-trick ball to Chase was going down the leg-side. However, skipper Virat Kohli took the successful review that resulted in Bumrah becoming the third Indian to make a red ball test hat-trick. A hat-trick in just 12th test match.

Astonishing Adaptability to Varying Conditions

Irrespective of format and situation, Bumrah always produces great results for India. Whether it was a tight World Cup 2019 finish, nervy death overs across IPL editions or focused test match spells; Bumrah has the shrewd mind and skills to execute his plans as per the condition and team needs. If the side requires Yorkers, he will bowl six out of six Yorkers. Need length balls on a sluggish pitch, and he will deliver that. Because of Bumrah, opposition calculates and keep his overs in check to attack bowlers other than him.

What an asset he is for India and Mumbai Indians.

Bumrah has mastered the art in a short span. He is arguably considered as one the best pace bowlers India has ever produced. It can be a vital call to count him amongst the likes of Kapil Dev, Srinath and Zaheer Khan, but Bumrah has created an immense impact which is unimaginable.

In away tests where India have struggled in the past, Bumrah took five-in-an-innings in England, Australia, South Africa and West Indies. In total, he bagged 103 wickets in 58 ODIs (below five runs an over) and 51 scalps in 43 T20Is at less than seven runs per over.

Amaizng Thinker, as far as Control and Skill are concerned

Every great fast bowler induces the batsman to play a wrong shot to get him out. This is a quality which Bumrah has nailed over the past few years. His late swing during the Caribbean tour was the hallmark of him as a thinking bowler.

Hat-trick of Bumrah was truly special. As per the stat, every ball pitched at fuller length and swung more than the previous one that put batsmen to go in the survival zone. His spell was the manifestation of ball beating the bat and stumps and leaving the batsmen hopeless.

If we look closer to the graphics, the same delivery to Brooks as Bravo would have hit the righty too high, while missing the leg stump. So, Bumrah landed the ball full, with late swing, took care of both Brooks and Chase to complete the milestone.

Self-Belief and Hunger to improve more

Unorthodox bowling action is not the mere reason he is not among the typical pacer. Bumrah just goes about his business very different to Steyn, Johnson, Lillee, McGrath and Anderson.

Because of his unorthodox action, he troubled the Australians in their own backyard. Play and a miss was a routine for the Aussie batsmen.

The above picture shows Bumrah was responsible for fourteen out of thirty-six play-and-miss in three tests. Also, 19.2 per cent of his deliveries left the willows of Kangaroo batsmen.

The smiling assassin broke the cricketing world back in 2016 and exceeded the expectations of everyone; probably of himself too. He took a short period to evolve his game. Yorkers, persistent hard lengths and bowling fast on dead decks, Bumrah has got perfection in an array of deliveries. From subtle slower ones to bullet-like pacey out-swingers, Bumrah of today was always better than yesterday’s Bumrah. He competes with himself by continually improving his game.

Last Word

Natural angle coming into the right-handers, Bumrah knows how to change the match situation. IPL made him mentally tough and playing in different conditions a tough guy to beat. Ian Bishop rightly commended Jasprit Bumrah in his tweet: Jasprit Bumrah is a once in a lifetime talent.
